Piccin is specific to the area that includes the provinces of Treviso and Pordenone, Piccinelli is typical of the Brescia area with strains probably originating also in the Bolognese and Sienese areas, Piccini is typical of the central belt that includes Tuscany, Marche, Umbria and Lazio has a stock also in the 'udinese, Piccinin is specific to the province of Pordenone, Piccinini is very common in Lombardy, Emilia, Marche and Lazio, Piccinino, very rare, it would seem Ligurian, Piccinni is typical of Puglia, Piccinno is Salento, Piccino is absolutely rare, all derive from from the medieval name Piccinus of which we have an example in the Pisan Documents of 1308: "In eternal amen appointments. Ex hoc public instrument clareat lectione quod Piccinus Harvest pisanus civis, quondam Rodolfini Vintages, for hoc publicum instrumentum constituit ...", or from nicknames originated from the short stature or from the thin build of the progenitors as we read in 773 in Cremona of a certain Arnulfus dict os Piccinus. Traces of these surnames can be found as early as the 1500s in the Marche, Tuscany, Lombardy and Veneto.
