Etymological origin of Italian surname: Sciorto


Sciortino is typical of western Sicily, as well as the almost unique Catania Sciorto, should derive from the Arabic word shurtih (Sentinel), traces of these cognomninizations we find in Castelvetrano (TP) since 1700 with the notary Giuseppe Sciortino. Additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Sciortino is a Sicilian surname even if it records a conspicuous presence in the north. It comes from the Arabic ' surti ' = policeman. There is also a toponym Sciortino, a hamlet of Tortorici (Messina).
