Zaia has a strain in the Trevisano, Pordenone and Udinese, one in the Rovigoto with a stump, probably secondary of Venetian origin, in Turin and a strain on the island of Lipari in Messina, which could also be of Istrian origin and traced back to the period Fascist, at 1940 era of deportation to Lipari of Friulani, Slovenes and Croatians opposed to the regime then. Integrations provided by Daniele Zaia quite common in Friuli and Treviso, seems to be the form taken in Italy by the surname Zajc, very common in neighboring countries of Slavic languages. The word means hare.
