ZONI

Zoni has a Lombard lineage, in the Varese area, in Gerenzano, Busto Arsizio and Tradate, in the Milanese, in Lainate, Milan and Legnano, and in Brescia in Brescia, Montichiari, Calvisano and Ospitaletto, an Emilian stock, in Parma in Parma, Sissa, Sorbolo and Colorno, in Bologna, Castel San Pietro and Molinella in Bologna and Piacenza in Piacenza, Cortemaggiore and Fiorenzuola d'Arda, with a small stock also in the Grosseto area, the origin would seem emilian and should refer to nicknames originating from a contracted form of the dialectal term zovini (young), according to another hypothesis it would be a contracted dialectal form of the name Giovanni, which would first become Zovàni and then Zoni, we find traces of this surname already in the 1500s in the Reggio area.
