ACCOSSU

Accossu, absolutely rare, is typical of Pabillonis in the Medio Campidano. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas ACCOSSU: from the Latin cossus = tarlo; o da cossu de agu (cat. cos) = eye of the needle (su cù de s'agu in Campidanese); su cossu is also the bodice. Su cossiu o cossu is also a large terracotta container similar to a laundry tub, also called sa scivèdda, from the Catalan cossi (vas gran de terra cuita). So in Latin it is the hard stone for sharpening, sa codi, from which also derives codina or cotina = rock, stone. We have one last suggestion, which we consider the most valid: Accossu can derive from a compound word: acconcia-cossu (acconciai = to fix; cossu = terracotta vat, scivèdda). The fact that Pabillonis (inhabited center of the Medio Campidano) counts alone (27) more than half of all the Cossus of Italy; and, considering that Pabillonis is known throughout Sardinia as the country of specialist terracotta workshops (the country of pots = sa 'idda de is pinjàdas), it is almost certain that the surname Accossu was born in that village, also because we know with certainty that the first acconciacossu (calderai) came from that inhabited center. He is currently present in 8 Sardinian Municipalities: Pabillonis (27), Ussana 3, Selargius 3, Villacidro 3, Gonnosfanadiga 3, Monserrato 3, Oristano 3, Guspini 3; and finally Rapallo (GE) with 2: these last 2 come from Gonnosfanadiga.
