AIRALDI | AIROLDI | AIROLDO | ARALDI | ARALDO | ARIOLDI | ARIOLDO

Widespread name particularly in Lombardy, although it is sometimes present in most of northern Italy. The name is of Longobard origin and derives from Ariovaldo composed of haria (army or even people of the Arii (warriors)) and waldan (to drive, command), with the clear meaning of leader, that is of the one who leads the army. The name in medieval times was often given to the firstborn of important families as a good omen. It then spread by imitation to the people. The surname therefore assumes the meaning of belonging to the family of an Ariovaldo and is not necessarily synonymous with noble lineage.

ARALDI | ARALDO

Araldi seems to be specific to the Cremona and Mantua areas, Araldo is much rarer and may have a strain between Cuneo and Savona, a doubt in the Bari area and a very doubtful one in Calabria, deriving from the name of Lombard origin Aroald of which there is an example in a marriage card of 722 where it reads: "... cum familia eorum, uinea, oliuito, silua, peculiar lawn in ipso loco supra memorato; and house Aroald ...", the modification in Araldus is found in the upper Milanese in the second half of 1100 with a certain Araldus de Pontegana (it could already be a beginning of abomination). additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli The surname Araldi derives from the medieval personal Araldus, which is in turn the mediolatino haraldus, from the Franconian * hariwald «employee of the army; herald".
