BARACA | BARACCA | BARACCANI | BARACCHI | BARACCHINI | BARACCHINO | BARACCO | BARACHINI | BARACHINO

The distribution of these surnames is limited to the north of Italy: Baraca is unique, Barachini is typically Tuscan from Pisa and Pisa, Barachino, absolutely rare, would appear to be from the Veneto, Friuli region, Baracca, very rare, typical of Mantua, of Mantua, San Martino dall'Argine and Rivarolo Mantovano, Baraccani is typically Emilian, of Modena and Bologna in particular, Baracchi has various stocks, in Lombardy in the Milanese and Bergamo areas, in the Genoese, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia and especially Modena areas, and in Tuscany in the Florentine and Aretino, Baracchini has a stock in Buia nell'udinese, one in Genoa and in La Spezia in Lerici and La Spezia, one in Cervia in Ravenna and one in Città di Castello in Perugia, Baracchino, much more rare, has some presence between Verona and Vicenza and a small stock in the Livorno area, Baracco is widespread throughout Piedmont, in Turin, Cuneo and Alessandria in particular, in Liguria in Savona, Genoa and La Spezia; in Veneto in Padua and Venice. The origin could be twofold, the most noble from the medieval Germanic term baro (free man) with different modifications while the other could be older, but less qualifying, from the Celtic bar (tree branch), or, better still, barac (hut made of tree branches), therefore indicating who lived in this type of hut.
