CARBOTTA | CARBOTTI

Carbotta, quite rare, has some strains in Apulia, Bari, Brindisi and Foggia, Carbotti, much more widespread, is typically Apulian tarantino, Martina Franca above all, Taranto, Crispiano, Mottola, Massafra, Pulsano and Grottaglie, of San Pancrazio Salentino in the Brindisi area and of Locorotondo in the Bari area, they should originate from France and derive from dialectal alterations of the French slang term carabot, with this word we indicated a group of sanctuaries created at Caen in Normandy during the French Revolution. They came from the military middle class, formed themselves as an armed revolutionary group in the first days of the revolution by procuring weapons and ammunition by taking them from the casemates of the castle of Caen, assuming the functions of a real National Guard whose motto was either the Law or death. The term carabot, derogatory and disparaging, was attributed to them by the nobility, assimilating them to stragglers, enormously underestimating both the situation and the possible consequences, which French history later told us.
