Cavagnoli comes from Cremona and Brescia, Cavagnolo is typical of the Monferrato area. They should derive from a dialectal nickname originated from the Lombard word cavagna (cesta, heap, quantity), but in some cases they may derive from toponyms like Cavagnolo (TO), or Cavagnola in the now disappeared Milanese, one of the countries destroyed in 1162 by Federico Barbarossa. Traces of this surname can be found in the Diplomatic Code of medieval Lombardy under the year 1154 in a deed of sale reads: "... Signum + manuum Iohannis Osmirii and Cavagnoli de Veura, propinqui parentes suprascripte femine ...".
