CHIABAUDO | CHIABOTTI | CHIABOTTO

Chiabaudo, very rare, is specific to Venaus (TO), Chiabotti is absolutely rare, Chiabotto is definitely more widespread, they are all certainly Piedmontese. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Chiabaudo, very rare, comes from Venaus (TO), Chiabotti, also extremely rare, has a greater lineage between Turin and Novara, Chiabotto, more common than the previous ones, is more typically Piedmontese, with a main nucleus in Turin, all these surnames should derive from the medieval name Chiabaudo or Chiabotto, which, through the mediation of the French Chabaud or Chabot, draws directly from the Germanic personal Garibald (from which also the famous Garibaldi; for the meaning of the name, see the surname Garibaldi). To better understand the complex transition from the Germanic Garibald to the Piedmontese Chiabaudo or Chiabotto, we must first of all remember that many Piedmontese surnames have been strongly influenced by Franco-Provençal onomastics (citing only a few examples, just think of the correspondence between the names Gerbaudo / Gerbaud Ghio / Guy, Giraudo / Giraud and Rinaudo / Rinaud, also found outside Piedmont). Starting from French onomastics, then, it must be said that in France the Germanic Garibald has known several adaptations, such as Gerbald, Gerbaud, Gerbot, Chabaud, Chabot, etc: the last two, in particular, are explained as phonetic variants of Gerbaud and Gerbots, due to the Franco-Provençal pronunciation of the prefixes Ger- and Cha-; hence, it is easy to imagine the subsequent Italianization in Chiabaudo and Chiabotto. As far as the surnames in question are concerned, therefore, they are the surnames of the personal names of the founders.
