Chianca is typical of Ariano Irpino (AV), Chiancone, very rare, should have a strain in Campania, between Avellino and Salerno and a secondary nucleus in the border area between Matera, Bari and Taranto, the Campania stumps should derive from the toponym Chianche ( AV), while the other strain would seem to originate from the area of Canosa di Puglia (BA) and should have the same etymology as the name of the town of Chianche, that is the medieval semi-dialectal term, common to Avellino, Matera and Bari Chianche Stone); it can be assumed that the surname arises as a location identifier (to live where a paved floor existed), for example in Bitonto, the Chianca is an area where there are Roman remains with stone slabs (chianconi). From a writing of 1585, concerning the boundaries between the territories of Bitonto, Bari and Modugno: "... up to a road which goes to quadrivio de Chianca ...".
