CHISO | CHISU

Chiso, almost unique, would appear to be from central Italy, and is probably due to a transcription error by Chisu, which is instead typically Sardinian. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CHISU: it could be a variant of Ghisu = robin (see Ghisu). In Sardinian the word chisu or kisu can derive from the verb kisìre, meaning to silence, to silence. So chisu would mean a nod to impose silence (with the index finger vertically on the tip of the nose)! And usually we add: "Ssh.citu"! (Ssh.zitto!). Kis, kis or chis, chis is instead the call, with something we have in hand, to offer to those in front of us, child or even small animal! We believe that in all cases it is an onomatopoeia. Currently the surname is present in 25 Italian Municipalities, of which 11 in Sardinia: Orosei 43, Nuoro 27, Siniscola 20, Orani 8, etc.
