Cocci, uncommon, has strains in the Prato, Florence, Arezzo, Pesaro and Rimini areas, in the Perugia, Macerata and Ascoli areas and in the Roman area, Coccia is widespread especially in Central Italy, has a small stock in the Rimini area, but the bulk is among Perugia, Ancona, Macerata, Ascoli, all the Abruzzi, all of Lazio, the Campobasso, Neapolitan and Foggia, Coccio, almost unique in central Italy, Coccione has a stock in Pescara and Poggiofiorito in Theatine, Coccioni has some presence in the Marches and a stock in the Roman in Rome and Tivoli, they should derive, directly or through an augmentative form, from the Latin name Coccius, the noble name of the Gens Cocceia, which had possessions in central Italy and in Benevento, although it cannot be excluded that in some cases they may derive from hypocoristic dialectal forms originating from contracted apheretic expressions originating from the name Francesco. We find tresses of these surnames in the 1400s with the Venetian historian Marcus Antonius Coccius Sabellicus (1436-1506).
