COFONE

Cofone is specific of the Cosenza area, of Acri in particular and of Corigliano Calabro, San Demetrio Corone, Spezzano Albanese and Rose, according to some it may derive from a Calabrian dialectal nickname originated from the term cufuni or cofoni (shabby, frail of health), but much more probably derives from the alteration of the name of an ancient Norman toponym, or from the Italianization of a Germanic name originating from the medieval Germanic term aat cofna (cerulean, bright), we find illustrious traces of this surname in the eleventh century with the Count Simone Cofone of Acri, Count of Acri and Padia (a fraction of Bisignano) and part of the Sila, who fought Byzantines and Saracens in the wake of the Norman King Robert Guiscard.
