COLLU

Collu is widespread in southern Sardinia, in the Middle Campidano, in the Iglesias, in the Cagliari area and also in the Ogliastra. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas COLLU: we believe it comes from Medio Campidano and properly from Villacidro, which has the highest number in Collu. We do not know for sure what it means. It could derive from the Latin collum = neck, or from the Italian neck, which means neck (part of the body that supports the head) or even bundle, packaging of objects etc. The inhabitants of Villacidro who bear this name do not know its meaning. The Sardinian coddu, which translates the Latin collum, indicates not only the neck, but the whole region of the shoulders: portai a coddu means precisely to carry on the shoulder. The only neck is called su tzùgu, sa mola de si tzùgu. But coddu in Sardinian also means hill, high ground, but it derives from the Latin collis = hill. We also remember that the scrotum, the bag of males, is also called cotza and even glue. From the Latin colea. From which derives collùdu, not castrated. Currently the surname Collu is present in 216 Italian Municipalities, of which 86 in Sardinia: Villacidro 182, Cagliari 181, Assemini 159, San Sperate 157, Quartu 141, Gonnosfanadiga 107, etc. additions provided by Fabrizio Collu we find traces of the surname Collu (very common in Sanluri, Villacidro, Samassi and Decimoputzu), in Sanluri in the writings concerning the maintenance and extension of the castle, already in the 14th century, in the form Coll (which makes us think of a Catalan origin probably due to an operation of repopulation and Iberization by the Aragonese winners), confirmed in the fiscal census of 1786, still written in Spanish, even though we have been released from the Crown of Aragon for 56 years and having been annexed to the Kingdom of the Savoy. In Catalonia the surname Coll is still widespread.
