Contessa is widespread in the Terni area, in central-northern Lazio, in the Neapolitan, in the Palermo area and in Puglia, Contissa, much more rare, it would seem from the Agrigento area, should derive from the medieval name Contissa or Contessa, of which we have an example in the Diplomatic Code of Lombardy medieval in a Carta vendicionis of 1147 in Milan: "Year dominice incarnationis milleximo centeximo quadrageximo septimo, tercio kalendas magii, tenth index. Constat nos Rolandum qui dicor Megenani et Contissam, iugales, atque Oriciam, relictam quondam Nicolai Megenani, et Mortarium, filium ipsius Oricie et suprascripti quondam Nicolai, omnes de civitate Mediolani ... ", it would therefore be a matronymic, but a derivation is also possible in some cases from toponyms such as Contessa (AV), Contessa Entellina (PA) or similar.
