CUBEDDU

Cubeddu is specific to northern Sardinia, but also has a strain in Cagliari, it should derive from the diminutive of cuba (mastello for fermentation of the must). additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CUBEDDU; CUBELLO; CUPELLO: cubeddu or cubedda, has the meaning of tinozzo, also called cubidìna and comes from cuba or cupa = barrel, vat; from the Latin cupa. Cubone / I cupone / i = large vat or barrel with a single bottom, for the fermentation of the must with the pomace. Currently the surname Cubeddu is present in 133 Italian Municipalities, of which 56 in Sardinia: Sassari 217, Seneghe 103, Cagliari 62, Olbia 46, etc. The surname Cubello is present in 33 Italian Municipalities, of which none in Sardinia. The surname Cubello is however present in the ancient Sardinian documents of the Middle Ages: Cubello Deiana Costanza, daughter of a Spanish nobleman Cubèl di Valenza and a Sardinian noblewoman of the Deiana family; in the mid-1300s he married the "donikello" Salvatore dei Bas-Serra of Arborea, from whom he had three children, with whom he began the Sardinian Cubello dynasty; starting from Leonardo, first marquis of Oristano of the Catalan Aragonese Kingdom of Sardinia; Antonio (son of Leonardo), second marquis of Oristano; Salvatore, brother of Antonio, third marquis of Oristano, etc. (Di. Sto. Sa by F. Cesare Casula). Also the text of the Fara, "de Rebus Sardois II" reports Leonardo and Antonio, marquises of Oristano: year 1420, Leonardus Cubello fuit mark Aristanis, to Petro Torrella prorege 4 kal. Aprilis et comes Gotiani creatus uxoremque duxit Quiricam Dean, ex qua duos filios habuit, Antonium et Salvatorem et 5 idus novembris years 1427 obiit. The Cubellos are not mentioned in the Condaghi and this confirms what was said about the origin of the surname. Cubeddu could be the Sardinian version of Cubello, but we have no proof to prove it. The surname Cupello is present in 41 Italian Municipalities, of which none in Sardinia. But he appears among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora, LPDE of 1388: Cupello Joanne - ville Terrenove (Olbia).
