Cugudda is very rare, typical of south-central Sardinia, it should derive from the Sardinian term Campidanese cugùdda (chestnut hedgehog), perhaps to represent the characteristics of particularly bristly progenitors, or to underline a thorny character of the progenitor, who was in the end a pasta from man. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas CUGUDDA: su cuguddu, in Campidanese is the hood. In Fonni su cukuddu is the mantle of orbace with a hood: from the Latin cucullus.A Tonara sa cruccùdda is the bun of women (sa cotza in Campidanese). In Logudorese, Curkùddu also has the meaning of braid and in a broad sense also of intestine. Still in Campidanese sa cugùdda is the chestnut urchin. Accuguddàu means hooded. The surname could derive from one of the various nuances, all of which refer to the Latin cucullus = cap. But let's not forget that with the voice cugùdda or cugùdula it is called the trinciatela (hyoseris radiata) and the thistle (cynara cardunculus). If we reflect further on the meaning and the etymology of cugudda, another possibility arises which is that they derive from the Latin cucutia: a voice that Professor Ferruccio Calonghi, luminary of the Latin language, defines in his vocabulary: cucutia, fruit unknown to us , present in the works of Pliny and Valerio Massimo. * Cucutia is none other than the fruit (artichoke) of the wild thistle and that is the cynara cardunculus silvestris, mentioned above, which here in southern Sardinia we call sa cugùtzua. We find the surname among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora, LPDE of 1388 (although with the variantCuculla): Cuculla Gonnario, jurato ville Sammungleo (* Sammungleo.odierno Samugheo. Mandrolisay or Barbagia di Belvì). In the Condaghe of San Nicola di Trullas, 11th, 13th century, there are also: Cucuta Ianne (306), servant of San Nicola, owner of a vineyard in Narbones, which he sold without the prior consent: the prior of the monastery therefore he claims the property; Cucutu Petru (252 - 287); and Cucutu Andria (241, 252 and 287), servants in Mularia (now Mulargia). Currently the surname Cugudda is present in 17 Italian Municipalities, of which 11 in Sardinia: Neoneli 14, Samugheo 8, Tortoli 8, etc. If we look again we can see that the Cuculla Gonnario of the 1388 LPDE belongs to Samugheo!
