LIGUORI | LIGUORO | LIQUORI

Liguori is decidedly Panitalian with a very strong nucleus in Campania, Liguoro is specific to the Neapolitan, Liquori has a stock in the Neapolitan dialect, one in Rome and one in Salento, may be descended from the Latin cognomen Ligur, Liguor, but a derivation from corruption is also possible of the name Ligorius (see Ligorio). additions by Fabio Paolucci To remember is Sant'Alfonso Maria de'Liguori (Naples, 1696 - Pagani, SA, 1787). Of noble family, theologian and moralist, he founded the Congregezione of the Most Holy Redeemer, whose members, also called "liguorini", had the mission to dedicate themselves to the poor and the sick. Sant'Alfonso de'Liguori was also bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti (BN). additions provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Liguori is a very difficult surname to decipher. Scholars of southern surnames find Liguori together with Ligori, in Salento, Calabria and Neapolitan. It is commonly believed that it comes from the toponym San Ligorio (LE), from the Sanctus Logorius from which Liborio and Licorio are also born. For some the origin could be the Latin 'liquor / liquoris' with the sense of 'liquid substance, invigorating drink', for others corruption of Lidorius with the sense of 'the one who strikes', for others it could be related to the name of the ancients Ligurian.
