LISSIA

Lissia, typically Sardinian, is specific of Gallura, of Calangianus in particular. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas LISSIA: (pronounced lissìa) Comes from the Latin lixivia (see Smooth). Sa lissìa = the lye (a solution obtained with boiling water and wood ash), used in ancient times for washing clothes: antique soap. In the history of Contemporary Sardinia we remember Pietro Lissìa di Calangianus (1877 - 1955)). Sardinian politician, he held positions of great importance, at regional and national level: in 1914 he was head of division at the Ministry of the Interior and in 1919, general manager and subsequently in the Council of State. He participated in the First World War: wounded three times, highly decorated for military valor. In politics he played in the Giolittian ranks and participated in electoral competitions. In 1919 he was elected a member of Parliament among the ranks of the so-called "liberal bundle", but then he joined the group of radicals. In 1921 he was re-elected in the liberal group. He held the post of Undersecretary of State for War in the first Facta cabinet. In 1922 he was directly commissioned by Mussolini to "put in peace" in Sardinia fascists with Sardinians. In 1924 he was again elected parliamentarian in the fascist "listone": he was the most voted in the whole Island. In 1929 he was appointed Senator of the Kingdom. He held political positions until February 1943 (Di.Sto.Sa. of Francesco Cesare Casula). Currently the surname Lissìa is present in 19 Italian Municipalities, of which 12 in Sardinia (Gallura): Calangianus 30, Olbia 21, Tempio 14, etc.
