LOVINI | LOVINO

Lovini is practically unique, Lovino is typical of the Bari area. additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi Lovini, almost unique, is found exclusively in the north, Lovino, much more widespread than the previous one, is typical mostly of the Bari area, but is present at very low frequency throughout the country, for both these surnames you can think of at least two origins. As for the northern stocks, Lovini and Lovino derive from the diminutive of the name Lovo, an archaic or dialect variant of the more common Lupo: it is one of those names (quite common at one time) taken from the animal world, such as Leone, Orso , Cat, Dog, etc .; the wolf, on the other hand, was a very dear animal even to Germanic mythology and this explains why, among the Nordic peoples, the name Wolf, that is Wolf, was very widespread. As regards the southern families of the Lovino families (and especially the Bari stock), the surname should derive from the term wine, to indicate either a trade name attributed to the founders (perhaps of the winemakers or wine producers) or a nickname due to their particular habits (perhaps because people addicted to drinking). This hypothesis, in fact, is confirmed by the presence of several Vino families in the Bari area, so that it seems that Lovino is nothing more than a variant of Wine: the prefix Lo, which in this case should be understood as the article il, is very common in the surnames of southern Italy and the same union of the article and the noun in many of these surnames is not at all rare (one can cite many examples, such as Lorusso, Larussa, Lorizzo, Larizza, Lobello, Labella, Logatto, Lagatta, etc).
