SASSU

Typical Sardinian, more specifically Sassari and Sassari in particular, with a strain not secondary even in Cagliari, could derive from names of locations containing the root sassu as mount on Sassu near Ozieri (SS), but more likely derives from Characteristics of the land of the area where the family lived, with sandy characteristics and alluvial stones. The word sassu in Sardinian language means just sandy soil, alluvial, or even river stone. Integrations provided by Giuseppe Concas SASSU: On SASSU is a type of clayey sand, used in construction, also the clay. In Latin saxum = rock, sandstone, stone. But Saxum is also the Crete Cimolia (of Cimolus, one of the Cyclades,????????). The voice is not present in the Wagner DES, in which we find for Crete The voice Terra Ludzàna, present in the Condaghi, in which there is no sassu voice. Evidently this is a modern term. The fact is that it names many Sardinian place names. Sassu is the name of a locality between Chiaramonti and Ozieri, of which we do not know exactly the meaning, but in southern Sardinia in the different toponyms, the meaning is of clay, Crete, Sabbione: Riu Sassu, Monte Sassu. The most famous of these is the pond of Sassu, or at least it was because it was drained and in its place there is currently a part of the important reclamation of Terralba-Arborea. The surname may still have the meaning of Sasso, from the Italian Sasso, and the meaning of Crete, clay, Sabbione. In the Southern Center part of the island, as mentioned, has for sure this last meaning. In all cases comes from the Latin saxum. Currently the surname is present in 170 Italian municipalities, of which 61 in Sardinia: Sassari 253, Cagliari 75, Bonarcado 62, Ittiri 52, etc. We recall the painter and sculptor Aligi Sassu, born in Milan on July 17, 1912, from Father Sardo and mother Emilian and died in Pollença, Majorca, Spain, on 17 July 2000 (read more on the Web: Aligi sassu).
