SCARDELLATO

Typical of Treviso and Trevigiano. Additions provided by Stefano Ferrazzi typical for the most part of Treviso, Scardellato derives from the hypochoristic fondant of the name Scardo, a prosthetic variant of the medieval name Cardo (through the addition of the initial-s, rather frequent phenomenon in Italian language): It is, indeed, of an old staff of Germanic origin, who, born from the apheresis of names such as Accardo, Riccardo, Viscardo, etc., gave rise to several names (now fallen into disuse, but a fairly widespread time) as Carduccio, Cardone , Cardillo, Scardino, Scardella, etc.; The suffix-ato, on the other hand, is explained in the broader context of the Venetian surnames or, in any case, north-east, where it assumes patronymic or matronymic value and therefore means the son of Scardello or Scardella. Integrations provided by Giovanni Vezzelli Scardellato-According to D. Olivieri, last name of the Venetian Euganean, p. 217, this surname Treviso comes from the Italian ' Scardova/Scardola ' which designates the ' Cyprinus scardula ', a freshwater fish of the order of Cyprinids.
