ATZORI

Typical Sardinian from the area that includes the provinces of Cagliari and Oristano and the southwestern Nuorese, it could derive from a nickname originated from the Spanish word azor (type of falcon), but it can also derive from the name of an ancient Sardinian toponym, now disappeared, Assori. additions provided by Giuseppe Concas ATZORI: etymology and meaning remain uncertain. It is unlikely that it derives from su stori: in this way the falcon is commonly called in Sardinian, from the Italian astore. We believe it comes from the name Salvatore (see Dettori or Loi). In the ancient maps the name Salvatore is reported in various exits: Bobore, Badore, Bore, Boreddu, Dore, Tori, Thori, Tzori, Zori, Loi, Balloi, Billoi, ori, Sori, etc. I de Thori, belong to one of the oldest and most powerful Sardinian families (see Dettori). Atzori> A-Tzori from or of Salvatore (cadet branch of the De Thori?). We recall that in the Condaghi, when indicating the descent or belonging of a child, or the marriage bond, or property for example of a servant, the preposition "de" is often used but sometimes also "a": Es. Lacon ( de) Susanna fiia "to" Barisone judge of Arborea and bride "to" Costantino Spanu, * CSMB, XI °, XIII ° sec. (87); Campana Maria married "to" Furadu Buriga, * CSMB (167); Camisa Maria fiia "a" Goantine, * CSMB (83), etc. The surname Atzori does not appear in the Condaghi, among the signatories of the Peace of Eleonora, in the Carte Cagliaritane etc .; but in history we remember: Atzori Antonio, bishop of the diocese of Bosa from 1592 to 1604, from Cagliari, seems to have descended from the powerful "de Zori" family, (de Thori, de Çori: this would fully confirm our hypothesis!); Atzori Giovanni, bishop of Bosa, from 1625 to 1626, from Cagliari, a relative of the previous one. We then have Atzori Giovanni Antioco, of a noble family from Oristano, partisan of Charles of Habsburg, in 1713, during the Spanish succession war. Here in Medio Campidano we remember Mons. Abramo Atzori (Sardara 1909 - 2001), rector of the Seminary of Villacidro, as well as director of the Catholic magazine "Nuovo Cammino", for 42 years. Personally I keep him, for me a religion teacher at the Villacidro high school, a very good memory. Currently the surname Atzori is present in 462 Italian Municipalities, of which 178 in Sardinia (with greater spread in the central south): Cagliari 447, Terralba 138, Oristano 137, Isili 136, Serramanna 127, Guspini 108, Assemini 105, Sassari 104, Capoterra 101, Arbus 92, Carbonia 92, etc. In the peninsula it is widespread in the central north. In the USA it is present in 2 States: Oregon and New Jersey with a family unit each.
