Among those families whom the vicissitudes of history have commended to the science of heraldry, yet whose origins elude absolute certainty, the house of Fevre, also styled le Febre, le Fèvre, and in Gallicised form Lefebvre or Le Febvre, claims a distinguished station: theirs is a nobility conferred not by patent but by the judgment of history itself. This lineage, of great antiquity and wide dispersion, is associated with numerous coats of arms, some established by documented provenance, others preserved by tradition, and still others whose origins are veiled in the obscurity of time, thus challenging the heraldist to discern the authentic from the apocryphal. Early records situate the family in the merchant cities of southern Germany, where, from the thirteenth century, its members held civic offices such as Commercium Prases and Stadtmann, culminating in their inclusion within the venerable Siebmacher of 1857.
