This lineage, of great antiquity and wide dispersion, is associated with numerous coats of arms, some established by documented provenance, others preserved by tradition, and still others whose origins are veiled in the obscurity of time, thus challenging the heraldist to discern the authentic from the apocryphal. Early records situate the family in the merchant cities of southern Germany, where, from the thirteenth century, its members held civic offices such as Commercium Prases and Stadtmann, culminating in their inclusion within the venerable Siebmacher of 1857.
