The surname Grigor is of English origin. It is derived from the given name popular throughout Christendom in the Middle Ages. The name is of Greek origin , 'Gregorios', itself derived from 'gregorien', to be awake or watchful. The name was an extremely popular one with the early Christians, who were mindful of the instruction 'be sober, be vigilant'; ( I Peter 5:8 ). However, at an early date the Latin form 'Gregorius' was associated by folk etymology with 'grex', 'gregis', flock, herd, under the influence of the Christian image of the good shepard. It was also the name of a third and fourth century apostle of Armenia. The name has been traditionally popular in Scotland, where it often took the form Gregor.
