According to the esteemed genealogists of Spain, the venerable house known as Abel, Abella, or Abrugnale is esteemed among the noble families of Aragon, Valencia, and Catalonia. The earliest recorded transplantation of this lineage to Sicily was effected by Ferratonio in the year 1282, in loyal service to King Peter the First. For his devoted labors, together with his sons Nicolò, Francesco, and Giovanni, Ferratonio was granted dominion over the islands of Malta and Gozo, though subsequently removed from these posts by King Frederick the Second. Thereafter, Francesco and Giovanni received the fief of Giaesi and the castellany of San Filippo d'Agiro, while Nicolò obtained the fief of Raginelgi within the territory of Caltagirone and the captaincy of Palermo in 1360. Among their descendants, Nicolò the Second acquired the castellany of the Castle of Syracuse and wed Liandra of Apulia, thereby enabling his son Raimondo to inherit the estates of Ferren of Apulia from his maternal uncle, with royal confirmation from King Martin in 1397.
