The noble house of Tavares traces its descent from the ancient Kingdom of Portugal, wherein it was numbered among the most illustrious of the high nobility. Its lineage is established in unbroken succession from the closing years of the twelfth century, at which time flourished Don Pedro Viegas T., Ricohome and eminent servant of King Don Sancho I. His posterity attained the loftiest stations within that monarchy, holding the dignities of Alcaides Mayores and Governors of Portalegre, Azumar, Alegrete, and Faro, as well as the lordship of Mira and bearing the title of Counts of Miranda. Alonso Hernández de Tavares, native of the isle of San Miguel in the Azores, journeyed to the Canaries and settled in San Cristóbal de La Laguna shortly after the Conquest.
