Parece que esta família existia já nos princípios da Monarquia portuguesa, pois nas inquirições efectuadas em 1258, por ordem de D. Afonso III, se menciona Paio A., morador em Canas de Senhorim, e Mendo A., que vivia na comarca de Viseu, portanto, na mesma região. Em tempo de D. Dinis se conhece Pedro A., freire da Ordem do Templo e alcaidemor de Tomar. Porém, só dos finis do século XV ou princípios do XVI se pode deduzir a genealogia desta família. Estêvão A., que viveu por esta época, assistia em Antuérpia em 1542, e consta que a Rainha Maria, governadora dos Países Baixs, lhe dera as armas que usam os Alvos. Casou-se com Filipa Bernardes, com quem jazia sepultado no claustro interior do convento de S. Francisco, de Lisboa, junto da porta da cozinha, em uma campa com as suas armas e esta inscição; "Sepultura de Estêvão A. e de sua mulher, Filipa Bernaldez e de seus herdeiros".
