A unas ocho leguas de Burgos, cuatro de Aguilar de Campó y tres de Villadiego, hubo en lo antiguo una ciudad importante que se llamó sucesivamente Patricia, Aregia o Varegia y despues Amaya, y era todavia opulentísima en tiempo de los romanos. Decimos todavia, porque segun se desprende de la historia, estuvo A. en el apogeo de su gloria y poderío, no solo antes que las águila romanas se cernieran sobre nuestra España, sino tambien antes que pusieran los cimientos de Roma Rómulo y Remo. Con las contínuas y sucesivas invasiones, guerras y revoluciones de que ha sido teatro nuestra patria, desapareció la insigne y antigua ciudad de Amaya, legando su nombe al territorio en que floreció, el cual se llamó tierra de Amaya, donde están actualmente y conservan este nombre la villa de Amaya y los pueblos Cañizal de A. y San Felices de A. Tomaron tambien este nombre por apellido los señores de la villa de A., los cuales tuvieron por principales ascendientes a Don Trastamiro y Don Ermigio, hijos de Don Alboazar Ramirez y nietos del rey de León Don Ramiro II. Llevó además este apellido, sin que se lea en la historia el motivo, el infante Don Nuño Álvarez de A., hijo del rey de León Don Alonso V. Juan López de A., comendador de Alarcon en la órden de Santiago, se distinguió en la batalla de las Navas, año 1212. Dos dignos hijos de esta noble casa, Gonzalo Mendez de A. y su hermano Don Suero Mendez de A., se distinguieron por sus proezas en Portugal. ...
