Antica e nobile famiglia originaria del territorio Toscano. In molti documenti si affermano la stessa origine e l'identità con la famiglia Bandini (fasc.366) secondo alcuni, i Bandini discendono da un Bandino di Buonricovero Baroncelli (inizi del XIV secolo); lo stemma del 6° tipo è del cardinale Ottavio Bandini, morto nel 1629: lo scudetto è l'arma del papa Clemente VIII Aldobrandini, che lo nominò cardinale nel 1596.

Dopo la fuga di Cola di Rienzo, gli succedé nel 1349 Francesco Baroncelli, essendosi Cola chiamato tribuno di Roma, usurpò il medesimo nome facendosi in riguardo di Cola chiamare Tribuno secondo. Riferirò le parole de Ciaccone nella vita di Papa Innocenzo VI, tradotte ad verba da MS. che va attorno della vita di Francesco Baroncelli: "Interregni occasionem captans Franciscus Baroncellus Scrobatij natus, infimae sortis homo, a nullo enim olim is observatus fuerat ceterm audax, et manu strenuus Populorm favore sublevatus tribunitiam potestatem occupat pulsit senatoria diguitate, Janne Ursino et Petro Columnensi hisque titulis utitur. Hos Franciscus Baroncellus Dei Gratia alame Urbis Gribunus secundus, ac Romanus Consul". E segue poi conferme il detto MS. raccontare come Cola di Rienzo tornasse a Roma, recuperasse la sua carica e cacciasse dal Campidoglio Francesco Baroncelli e l'uccidesse, nel che accordano il Monaldeschi nel Compendio Historico, lib. 2, et altri. Però mi fa difficoltà grande che Francesco venga chiamato: "infime sortis homo et filius Scrobatij", poiché Ludovico Monaldeschi nel suo Diario sotto l'anno 1327 e così 28 anni prima di questo successo, raccontando l'entrata, che fece in Roma l'Imperator Ludovico il Bavaro, disse che lo riceverono molti Cavalieri Romani, nominando per primo un Colonna, per secondo un Baroncelli. Nell'anno 1328 il medesimo racconta, che Cicco Baroncelli fu uno dei Cavalieri giocanti con il toro. Cecco Baroncelli fu conservatore del 1443 e del 1455 Eugenio mandò M. Giovanni Baroncelli e M. Lelio della Valle a Napoleo Orsini a dirgli che non entrasse in Roma.
