Apelido de uso antigo tanto em Portugal como em Espanha, apontando-o os genealogistas espanhóis como tendo as suas mais profundas raízes em Castela, onde as armas que aqui se apontam foram usadas. Não indicam, contudo, em qual das terras castelhanas teriam tido o seu berço, mas apenas que daí se espalharam pelos restantes reinos peninsulares. Outros investigadores portugueses admitem a hipótese de ser de raíz toponímica, derivado de algum dos locais com essa designação existentes no país, como sejam em Fermedo, Arouca, em Fornos, Castelo de Paiva, em Vila Nova de Gaia, etc. Mas foi sobretudo no leste algarvio, especialmente na região de Loulé, que o apelido parece ter sido usado mais recuadamente, sabendo-se, no entanto, que já no século XVII algumas famílias de apelido Cavaco se encontravam fixadas até nos Açores. Daí era Sebastião Pereira Cavaco, filho de Manuel Rodrigues Cavaco, a quem em 24.3.1651 são concedidos os Foros de Escudeiro Fidalgo e Cavaleiro Fidalgo da Casa Real. Também em Baleizão já em finais dessa centúria os havia, distinguindo-se Manuel Martins Cavaco, cujas obras literárias conheceram várias edições. Ou, ainda, em Azambuja, de onde era oriundo João Soares Cavaco, que em 2.5.1672 recebe Alvará de Capelão da Casa Real. ...
