Chevalerie des plus illustres du Forez qui avait fondé l'an 1150, l'abbaye de Valbenoîte près St-Etienne. En 1190, un d'Urgel seigneur de St-Priest, combattait en Palestine. Josserans d'Urgel seigneur de St-Priest, se croisa l'an 1251. Filiation: Josserand d'Urgel seigneur de Saint-Priest et de Saint-Etienne, marié en 1339 avec Mateline, alias Béatrix de Jarez, héritière de sa maison. Six chanoines-comtes de Lyon sous le nom d'Urgel ou de Saint-Priest. Deux branches principales: I. Les d'Urgel de La Chabaudière, éteints au XVème siècle; - II. les d'Urgel de Saint-Priest, subdivisés en plusieurs rameaux: 1° seigneurs d'Apinac substitués aux Maréchal; 2° barons et marquis de Saint-Chamond, seigneurs de Montchal, etc. qui jouèrent un rôle dans les guerres de religion, éteints après le XVIème siècle dans les Mitte de Chevrières; 3° barons et marquis de Saint-Priest; 4° seigneurs de Fontanès en 1333, d'où sont sortis en 1589 les de Saint-Priest d'Albuzy alliés en Velay; 5° seigneurs de la Fouillouse, de Châteauneuf, de Vernoux, maintenus en Lyonnais le 31 octobre 1667 et en Languedoc le 29 janvier 1669, encore représentés; 6° seigneurs de Sury en Beaujolais. Guy, dit Guyot d'Urgel, baron de St-Priest etc., fils de Briant et de Dauphine de Tournon, s'allia en 1380 à Smaragde de la Roue veuve de Briant de Retoutour seigneur de Dunières. Son descendant Gabriel de Saint-Priest, fils d'autre Guy et d'Alix Gaste de Lupé, épousa en 1486 Anne de la Roue, qui lui apporta la baronnie de Dunières donnant entrée aux Etats du Velay. Il devint chevalier de St-Michel et suivit Charles VIII à la conquête du royaume de Naples (1494). Parmi les illustrations de cette maison citons: des chevaliers de l'ordre du roi, de Malte et de différents ordres; des gouverneurs de provinces; des généraux, gentilshommes de la chambre, etc; trois abbesses de la Séauve-Bénite (1563-1628); deux abbesses de Bellecombe (1284-1430); de vaillants capitaines etc.. ...
