La storia della famiglia viene narrata nella pregevole opera "Il Dizionario storico-blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane estinte e fiorenti", del genealogista Giovan Battista di Crollalanza, pubblicata a Pisa nel 1886 in tre volumi, di oltre 1400 pagine. Ascritta dal 1528 alla nobiltà genovese ed aggregata negli alberghi Franchi, Interiani e Centurione, la casata Da Novi deriva dall'unione di diverse famiglie originarie di Novi, benché già cittadine genovesi, che abbandonarono le avite cognominizzazioni, Pellegrini, Cavanna, Cattanei e Cappelloni, per assumerne una unica che ne ricordasse l'origine. Essa, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
