Apellido canario. Don Nicolás E. y Murphi, nació en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria el 17 de febrero de 1838 y murió en París el año 1914. Hijos de militar progresista y descendiente de irlandeses por línae materna. Fue su padre Don Francisco de Paula E. y García-Caballero (Capitán graduato del Regimiento de Infantería, de Albuera, Séptimo ligero) y de Doña Isabel Murphi y Meade, casados en Santa Cruz de Tenerife el 17 de julio de 1833. Don Nicolás fue militar de carrera, como su padre y logró la Cruz laureada de San Fernando individual; se separó del Ejército con el grado de Capitán, para dedicarse a la política. Fue Diputado a Cortes tres veces y Ministro de la Guerra con la Primera República. Poeta y traductor, dedicó sus últimos años a la traducción de obras francesas para una editorial parisina. Contrajo matrimonio en Puerto Rico, país por el que tenía una gran devoción, el año 1867, con Doña María de la Concepción Suárez, y Otero y tuvo dos hijos: Francisco, que fue Ingeniero Naval y Arquitecto, casando con Inés de Lemoine, y Ana E. Suárez, que no tomó estado. El estudio del escudo heráldico familiar nos "habla" de quienes formaron el origen de la familia E., pues esa era su función, la de manifestar a los demás sus elementos diferenciales. Los esmaltes del arma de los E. pregonan los siguientes valores: la Plata corresponde al símbolo de la Luna, pureza, sinceridad, templanza, clemencia y amabilidad son las características espirituales de la familia, a las que hay que añadir otras como el afán de victoria y éxito y la elocuencia. ...
