Antica ed assai nobile famiglia originaria della Toscana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con un cospicuo insediamento in Liguria, nei territori limitrofi al comune di Sarzana come il borgo di Falcinello, ove, secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, passò circa nel XVII secolo. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione andrebbe ricercata in una forma italianizzata e contratta del nome medioevale francese "Ferrant" pertanto, secondo alcuni studi, la casata potrebbe avere una lontana origine francese, forse comune con in La Frande, casato nobile transalpino. In ogni modo, in Pisa troviamo già nel XIV secolo un Colo Frandi, il quale fu degli anziani negli anni 1342, 1344, 1352, 1355.
