Le nom de Griffon semblerait avoir été primitivement Griffoul; ainsi, dans un contrat de mariage de Etienne Griffoul, du 10 septembre 1591, il y a Griffon dans le corps de l'acte , et, sur la suscription, Griffoul; tandis que dans une vente de décembre 1667, d'Isaac, il y a dans l'acte Griffoul et la signature est Laroque Griffon. Il est à remarquer aussi que si, dans leurs testaments, Daniel Griffoul et sa femme Suzanne de Solminiac déclarent que leurs enfants sont: Isaac, sieur de la Roque, marié avec Jeanne de Saintours, etc., dans les papiers de Griffon Savy ou trouve que Isaac avait épousé Jeanne de Saintours, et que Marie, leur fille, avait épousé Henri de Savy. De plus, une ordonnance de d'Hozier du 1er février 1698, jointe au tableau généalogique présenté par la famille et où les noms sont toujours Griffoul, porte: Armoiries de Isaac Griffon, sieur de la Roque. Griffon et Griffoul ne seraient donc qu'un seul et même nom. Cette famille, suivant l'opinion du vicomte de Gourgues, serait originaire de Griffond, près Sarlat. Le nom de Griffon figure dans les jugements des intendants de Bordeaux portant maintenue de noblesse (période de 1697 à 1718); il se voit également dans les listes des votants pour les députés de la noblesse aux États-Généraux de 1789. ...
