Não se sabe quem usou primeiramente este apelido, provàvelmente tomado da cidade da G., mas o mais antigo que com ele se conhece é Estêvão da G., secretário de D. Dinis, seu eichão e escanção-mor, ofício que depois se chamou copeiro-mor, procurador e plenipotenciário do mesmo Príncipe no ajuste das diferenças havidas com seu filho o infante D. Afonso, depois Rei e IV do nome. Em remuneração dos muitos serviços dele recebidos, D. Dinis lhe deu para ele e seus legítimos descendentes os casais que possuía em Torres Vedras, e por alvará de 24-IV-1317 se vê que ele era seu escrivão, pois assim é designado neste diploma. Aos 9-VI-1320 fez testamento no castelo de Lisboa, junto dos paços onde vivia, no qual declara ser freguês de Santa Cruz e S. Mamede. Foi sepultado na igreja de S. Vicente, em sepulture de pedra alta, levantada do chão, com as suas armas em cima, conforme testemunha Gaspar Álvares de Lousada, que a viu. Frei António Brandão, na Monarquia Lusitana, entende que Estêvão da Guarda veio de Aragão com a Rainha Santa Isabel, mas não apresenta fundamentos incontestáveis. Recebeu-se Estêvão da G. com D. Sancho Domingues, como se verifica do emprazamento que o convento de S. Vivente lhe fez da quinta de Água Livre, por sua vida sòmente, datado de 20-X-1322.
