I membri di tal casato si sarebbero stabiliti in Forlì al seguito di Marco Livio Salinatore o, del di lui figlio, Gaio Livio Salinatore. Secondo altre fonti, invece, capostipite del casato sarebbe un Tito, segretario di S. Mercuriale II, Vescovo di Forlì. In ogni modo, i M. si rinvengono in Forlì sin dall'Alto Medioevo e, pertanto, sono la famiglia patrizia dalle origine più remote. D'altronde, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, tal famiglia ha dato alla Patria una serie di valorosi guerrieri, abili diplomatici, politici, giuristi, scienziati, letterati e uomini di Chiesa.
