The surname 'Moser' originates from England. It is a cognate of the name 'Moss', derived from the topographic name for someone who lived by a peat-bog (from the Middle English, Old English word 'mos'), or habitation name from a place so called. It was not until later that the vocabulary word came to denote the class of plants characteristic of peat-bog habitat, under the influence of the Old Norman cognate 'mosi'.
