Haute bourgeoisie établie dès le XIVème siècle à Allègre où elle possédait fiefs, vivant noblement au XVIème, anoblie au XVIIème. On trouve son nom diversement écrit Mozat, Mozac ou Mauzac. Un Guillaume Mozac fut abbé de Pébrac de 1266 à 1274. Filiation à Allègre depuis: François-Claude Mozac, marié à Jeanne Aligier, fille de noble Pons inscrit à l'armorial de 1450. Deux branches: l'aînée, des seigneurs de Boissière, du Chier, de Beaurecoeil, etc., s'est continué à Allègre avec Géraud Mozac, capitaine d'une des portes de cette ville (1460-1529). Son fils épousa Anne du Chier, héritière de cette terre. Leur postérité compte: des chanoines de St-Georges de St-Paulien; un prieur de Crevon en Normandie qui apporta dans la ville d'Allègre, en 1547, la statue miraculeuse de N.-D. de Pitié, pour laquelle son frère construisit un oratoire qui subsiste toujours; un franciscain, député par son ordre auprès du pape Urbain VIII; des religieux bénédictins de l'abbaye de la Chaise-Dieu; un avocat en la cour du parlement de Paris, qualifié noble en 1573; un intendant des gabelles à Issoire (1610); un secrétaire du roi, maison et couronne de France, anobli par cette charge (1702). Cette branche s'est éteinte avec Isabeau dame de Beaurecoeil et du Chier, marié le 16 février 1691 à Jean Amarithon écuyer, seigneur de Basserut, du Plaisir, etc. secrétaire du roi. La branche cadette des seigneurs de la Monerie et de Liberty, issue de Pierre Mozac (1500-1570), vivait à Marsac près Ambert, puis à Fournouls, s'est éteinte dans les Serre de Gauzy et les d'Aubigneu.
