La famiglia è un ramo della potentissima famiglia dei Vitelli e discendente da Vitellio, di Angelo Vitelli, che nel 1302 si stabilì a Foligno. Suo figlio Puccetto fu nel 1342 capitano della Custodia di Siena. Giacomo, di Puccetto, perseguitato da Trincia Trinci, signore di Foligno, riparò a Corneto, dove nacque il celeberrimo Cardinale Giovanni, Arcivescovo di Firenze e generale delle armi di S.R.C. Suo nipote Bartolomeo fu anche egli Cardinale nel 1447. Altri personaggi valentissimi vanta questa famiglia e tra essi il padre Muzio, che fu generale della Compagnia di Gesù. Uscirono inoltre da questa Gens numerosi cavalieri di Malta e di S. Stefano, e possedette molti feudi e signorie. Federico II concesse loro nell'anno 1452 il titolo di conte, più tardi quello di marchese sul feudo di Rigatti.
