It is derived from the metonymic occupational name for someone who dealt in weights and measures, for example a corn factor, from the Middle English word 'pekke', which means peck (an old measure of dry goods equivalent to eight quarts or a quarter of a bushel). It is also a topographic name, as a variant of 'Peak', for someone living by a pointed hill, or a regional name for the Peak District (from the Old English word 'Peaclond) in Derbyshire, from the Old English word 'peac', meaning pointed hill (found only in place names).
