Nobile ed assai antico casato trentino, originariamente detto Schir di Serrada, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni europee. La tradizione vuole che i Rella siano originari dell'Andalusia, ove dovevano essere inseriti tra i "nobili moreschi". Tuttavia, quando vi fu la Reconquista cattolica, nel 1492, a causa della loro fede cattolica e del loro sangue moresco, gli Schir di Moresco furono costretti ad abbandonare la terra natia, trovando rifugio in Venezia; ove, d'altronde, furono accolti molti "fuggiaschi spagnoli". L'attuale cognominizzazione si sarebbe originata con "Domenico Schir da Serrada Rohela" (1390-1480). Costui, infatti, prese il nome dal cimbrico "Rohela", derivante dal germanico "Ruhe" (= riposo, calma). La sua discendenza, poi, tenne costantemente il cognome "Rohela", che, però, dopo alcuni anni, si modificò, per facilità, in "Rella". Un ulteriore ramo della famiglia, inoltre, si denominò Spilzi.
