Família antiga, cujo apelido provém de alcunha, que se ignora em quem principiou, e significa temido no português arcaico. Nos tratados genealógicos a origem desta família anda, geralmente, muito confusa, pois os linhagistas aplicam a Rui Fernandes, homem de Abrantes, os feitos e sucessos da vida de Gabriel Gonçalves de Freitas, que militou em África e teve armas novas concedidas por D. Afonso V. Como nestas armas figura uma cabeça de mouro dizem que o mesmo Príncipe concedeu essa peça por aquele haver morto em desafio um mouro valoroso, chamado Teymur ou Temudo, e que lhe deu o nome deste por apelido. Fantasias que não resistem à lógica, nem aos documentos, pois estes não falam na concessão do apelido, o qual já existia anteriormente, nem indicam a morte de nenhum mouro em particular. Documentos existentes em Abrantes mencionam casas que partiam com terrenos de Lopo Rodrigues Temudo em 1422 e referem-se a bens da herança do Dr. Jorge Temudo, que era cunhado de uma Catarina Lopes, em 1427 e 1430, e supõe-se que, também, no ano de 1425, quando dizem, apenas, casas da herança do Temudo, e, ainda, aludem a uma terra que partia com Rui Temudo em 1437. Não deve este Rui Temudo ser o Rui Fernandes, de quem dizem os genealogistas provir a linhagem, porquanto parece mais antigo. Conforme Rangel de Macedo deixou escrito no seu nobiliário, Rui Fernandes era filho, ao que parece, de Fernão Rodrigues, morador na vila de Abrantes. ...
