Ancienne maison qui compte parmi ses membres les ducs de Penthièvres, d'Etampes, de Mercoeur, pairs de France, princes d'Anet et de Martigues, etc. seigneurs de Chilhac en Auvergne, de la Ville de Saugues, etc., etc. César, duc de Vendôme, de Mercœur, de Beaufort, etc., fils légitimé d'Henri IV et de Gabrielle d'Estrées, épousa en 1609 Françoise de Lorraine qui lui apporta le duché de Mercœur en Auvergne et Gévaudan. Louis, duc de Vendôme, pair de France, chevalier des ordres du roi, gouverneur de Provence, possédait le duché de Mercœur en 1651. Devenu veuf, il entra dans les ordres et fut créé cardinal. Son fils aîné, Louis-Joseph duc de Vendôme, d'Etampes et de Mercœur, fut un des plus célèbres généraux de son temps. N'ayant pas de postérité, il légua le duché de Mercœur à sa femme, la princesse Anne de Bourbon-Condé. Cette grande terre fut dans la suite (1719), vendue au marquis de Laffey qui n'en prit pas possession et la céda, le 21 juin 1720, à Louis-Armand de Bourbon prince de Conti, en faveur duquel elle fut érigée à nouveau en duché pairie (juillet 1723). Le prince de Conti vendit le duché de Mercœur au roi et Louis XV le comprit dans l'apanage qui fut donné au comte d'Artois en 1773. ...
