The tradition, especially repeated at the beginning of the nineteenth century, of a descent of the Garibaldi from the Lombard Grimoaldo, while not having any documentary value, serves to prove the importance that the family has always had in the territory of origin, the valley of Né (Chiavari ). Even when some branches of this family emigrated to Genoa or the rivieras and obtained noble distinctions, the primitive stock continued to have the nobility preeminence in local history: several Garibaldi were podestàs and commissioners or captains; one of them held the representation of the central government in Nè, while the events of the civil war had given the territory of Chiavari in the hands of Gian Andrea Doria, head of the old nobles. The correspondence of Commissioner Garibaldi is still found in the state archives in the documents of 1575-1576. The Garibaldi therefore presents us with the type of those numerous and powerful families, which in the Riviera di Levante constituted aggregations similar to the Genoese hotels and were at the head of the so-called relatives (16th century). Ceased these last manifestations of feudalism, with the disappearance of the Fieschi, the family continued in its importance and also in the city of Chiavari gave many of its members to the local judiciary. In the valley of Nè the Garibaldi, throughout the eighteenth century, flourished in numerous and powerful branches. It is worth mentioning that they belong to the various branches of the family: Francesco, doge at the end of the fourteenth century; Leone q. Giovanni, Count Palatine, 1430; Domenico q. Oberto, noble (1488); Lorenzo, Agostino, Antonio, Nicolò, ascribed in the Reformation of 1528 to the hotels Lomellino, Interiano and Giustiniano.
