The origin of this illustrious surname, by references from historians of the time and others found out by Araldis in the registry files of cities and other private ones, we could affirm, but not assure, that this shield or another very similar to it, initially appeared from the XI to XIV century, particularly in the campaign against Islam accompanying the hosts of D. Alfonso, Lord of Molina and brother of Fernando III the Holy King of Castile, in the battle of the fields of Jerez in 1231 against Aben Hud. The references of this family seem to be needed more frequently from the 15th to the 19th century, especially the events of the escort who accompanied the future King D. Felipe, son of Carlos I (V of Germany), from La Coruña to Southampton on 20 July 1554 for the celebration of his wedding with the unappreciated Doña Maria Tudor, called the bloodthirsty, Queen of England and daughter of Henry VIII. All this seems to coincide with the family memory of some of the members of the Masgrau family branch.
