Se desconoce el principio de esta familia, cuyo apodo no se ha divulgado, pero algunos genealogistas tienen la intención, debido a la similitud del nombre, de que se origine en Vizcaya. Debido a que este nombre es el patronímico de Abad, no hay una sola familia que lo tenga porque muchos deben tener su origen. Este patronímico también tomó la forma de Abbot y se usa, incluso sin provenir del genitivo, como el nombre propio del que proviene: Abbot.
